I've been watching it over in shorter installments and there's definitely more humor when you don't overstrain.Erich Kuerstenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02850572368098319317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30487573.post-43147612651293674142009-06-22T16:58:46.627-05:002009-06-22T16:58:46.627-05:00You're right to identify Marienbad as one of t...You're right to identify Marienbad as one of the first modernist horror films. As such, it influenced everyone from Bergman (The Silence) and Kubrick (The Shining) to Roeg and Lynch. You can trace its roots back to Caligari's sanitarium.

I was knocked out by it at my first viewing of it in a theater at age 16 - I'd never seen anything like it! Commenting on my Pauline Kael post at Bright Lights After Dark, you said you found the film lacking in humor. But the humor is there, if you look for it. You can find it in, among many other places, the cardboard silhouette of Hitchcock that appears about 5 minutes in, or the game variously played with matchsticks or cards that our frustrated "hero" can never win.
